Tea Amounts and Time for Steeping

Tea Amounts and Time for Steeping

Hi Everyone

I get asked a lot about how much loose-leaf tea to use and how long to steep. Well depending on the sized of your cup. Most are around 8 to 10 ounces, which means from 1 to 2 tsp of loose-leaf tea. Using a regular sized tea ball, you should only fill it half full because tea expands and you can pop your tea ball and either break it or have loose tea leaves in your cup. Here's a general guideline for temperatures:

Tea                                     Temperature                              Time

White                                     175                                           2-3 minutes

Green                                   170-180                                      2-3 minutes

Oolong                                 190-212                                     3-4 minutes

Black                                     200-212                                     4-5 minutes

Darjeeling                             200-212                                     3 minutes

Herbal                                   200-212                                     5 minutes

Rooibos/Honeybush             200-212                                     3-4 minutes

Steeping is also up to preference and how strong you like your tea. I hope this helps everyone with this simple guideline.
